The Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act has made it to the Senate—and we need your help getting it to pass! Take a minute to ask your Senator to show support for sea otters by co-sponsoring the bill. So far it has been sponsored by only Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) and co-sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA).

With the recent decline in the otter population and ever increasing threats to water quality and the coastal ocean, sea otters need our help now more than ever. The funding that this bill provides could make all the difference.

As a member of The Otter Project, I am concerned about the plight of the southern sea otter. Sea Otters have been listed as threatened on the Endangered Species Act since 1977. In spite of our best efforts, the population is still struggling, and in fact, as of this year, it has entered a decline.
That’s why I’m asking for your help. Will you support sea otter recovery by co-sponsoring the Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act, S. 1748?
The Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act would support measures to reduce threats to sea otters. The bill balances the need for research with actionable recovery initiatives, and it has widespread support from conservationists, researchers, fisheries, and coastal communities.
Sea otters are a keystone species that impact the balance of kelp forest ecosystems—some of the most productive, diverse systems in the world. Helping to protect the sea otter population has disproportionate benefits for surrounding ecosystems, which serve as the economic and cultural basis for millions of coastal Californians. Healthy sea otters lead to healthy coastal ecosystems, which are beneficial to everyone.
